The surgery itself is quite short, often lasting less than an hour including prep time. In addition, recovery time is lessened dramatically with LASIK. You should notice a definite improvement in your vision just one day after surgery (with previous procedures, visual improvement may not have been noticeable for up to a week). The flap created during the surgery serves as a protection for the eye while it heals. This means less pain after surgery.
